2024
On April 27, 2024, Pat Cox, P.E., P.S. was awarded the Cecil Kingsley Outstanding Achievement award at the BG Consultants Company celebration.
The Cecil Kingsley Outstanding Achievement Award, given by BG Consultants, Inc., recognizes an individual whose behaviors provide a role model for others. While no one person in an organization can be credited with the achievement of excellence, this award will recognize and set forth leadership behaviors that have inspired, encouraged, challenged, and empowered others to achieve performance excellence.
Originally from Colby, KS, James “Pat” Cox made Manhattan his forever home when he chose to attend Kansas State University to pursue a civil engineering degree. While a student at KSU, Pat worked at Schwab Eaton and upon graduation he became a civil engineer at the firm. He was known as “The Water Guy” by many of his fellow colleges, some including our very own Fred Gibbs, Stephen Berland, Monty Prescott and Al Dieball. A month after Stephen and Fred founded BG Consultants Inc., Pat joined the rest of the team on April 1, 1976. He received his P.S. in 1978 and his P.E. in 1980.
Pat worked primarily as a water engineer, working on wastewater treatment facilities and water towers in the 80’s with prominent projects for the Cities of Basehor and Baldwin City. Labeled the “Promoter”, Pat developed several great and long-standing relationships throughout his 48 years with BG. He received the contract for On Call Engineer for Kansas State from 2008-2018. He has even worked with KSU for so long that he implemented the improvements for the D-1 Memorial Parking lot in the 1980’s and again in 2016!
His most notable work at BG is the Kansas Army National Guard Adjutant Generals Department On Call Contracts. Pat put in the bid for On Call Engineering in 2013 and we have held it for almost 10 years now. Within those 10 years we have added On Call Architecture and On Call MEP contracts.
When people ask about Pat, everyone says “He goes all the way, never halfway.” Not only does this apply to his career but also his personal life.
Pat has several hobbies that speak true to who he is as an individual. An avid drag racer, Pat enjoyed building cars from scratch and racing them on the tracks. He loved being creative and using the computer mechanics to adjust speed and mobility of his cars. Although, unable to build as much in his older age you can always find him at the Topeka Raceway. Pat also has his Scuba Instructor license. Interested in the challenge of Scuba diving he completed a PADI Divemaster certification, completed 60 logged dives and obtained CPR and First Aid certifications.
Other hobbies of his include; crafting knives, fishing and adding to the stamp collection his father started and passed down to him.
Future Award recipients will share the character and leadership traits that personify Cecil’s legacy as they lead BG into the future and inspire achievement and high performance. They will be identified as a catalyst for excellence throughout their related areas of our firm culture and business practices. The award will be presented when a BG employee demonstrates the leadership qualities the Cecil Kingsley Outstanding Achievement Award promotes, is nominated by the President, and is deemed worthy by the BG Consultants, Inc. Board of Directors.
