During KDOT’s  reconstruction along 6th Street (US-40) in Lawrence, the intersection of 6th Street and Congressional Drive was identified as a future signalized intersection. In particular, the grand opening of a new Wal-Mart on the northeast corner of the intersection necessitated further traffic signal control.

BG Consultants’ traffic engineering team conducted a traffic analysis and delivered designs for traffic signals, pavement markings, and improved pedestrian facilities at the intersection. Traffic signal design incorporated illuminated street name signs using energy efficient LED lights, a battery backup system, and video detection. The FHWA-approved flashing yellow arrows for protected/permitted left-turn phasing were also incorporated into the project to eliminate the potential yellow-trap during the left-turn permitted phase.
