City of Emporia contracted with BG Consultants, Inc. to evaluate three lift stations in their sanitary sewer collection system. Included in these were stations 1 and 2, two of the largest stations in the system, both capable of pumping in excess of 1,600 gallons per minute. Lift Station 2 was submitted for grant funding to the Kansas Department of Commerce - Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and received $700,000 in grant funding.

Rehabilitation and Lining of upstream manhole, Bypass pumping wet well, Corrosion protection liner in wet well. Installation of new mechanical screen equipment in wet well, new dry pit submersible pumps, valve and piping, new pump VFD’s and controls, electrical improvements, generator, gas sensor, HVAC improvements, 496 LF of fencing, 263 SY of 8” concrete pavement. 

The project presented various challenges, including the location of the lift station adjacent to a mobile home park. The project required removing mobile homes located on City property, clearing a row of trees, and installing a new fence. The project team also had to work around the existing infrastructure and ensure the safety of personnel and residents. 

BG Consultants performed project design and construction administration, ensuring the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the client.
