City of Onaga Streetscape
Onaga, KS
Cottonwood limestone buildings lining Leonard Street in downtown Onaga create a charming, small town atmosphere, but sidewalk and infrastructure deterioration began to detract from this. The Onaga City Council decided it was time to make some changes, apply for and receive KDOT Transportation Enhancement funds. The improvements are centralized around Leonard Street from Second Street to Fourth Street, and also branch off on both sides of Third Street.
BG Consultants was retained to design replacements and upgrades of the street pavement, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, lighting, the stormwater drainage and water distribution systems, and outdoor furniture in the downtown district. Decorative planters and light poles were alternately spaced, noted by decorative concrete pavers. The park benches and trash receptacles are durable and monolithic, composed primarily of concrete. Each street corner was landscaped with attractive yet low maintenance plantings. A pavement marking and permanent signage plan was carefully developed to maximize parking in the downtown area. The City has seen enhanced pedestrian and automotive traffic with these improvements in place.
