BG Consultants, Inc. was hired by Emporia State University to design and oversee structural repairs and accessibility improvements to the West Stadium seating structure. The west stadium had been assessed in 2021, revealing evidence of slope creep and deteriorated concrete causing movement and structural instability.

To address these issues, BG Consultants designed a stabilization solution that involved pinning the existing concrete seating structure to the underlying bedrock using helical tieback anchors. This method effectively halted further movement caused by slope creep and will provide long-term stability to the structure.

In addition to the structural stabilization, BG Consultants designed and coordinated extensive concrete repairs and replacements in areas where deterioration had occurred.

The project also incorporated significant accessibility upgrades, including th installation of new handrails at every stair aisle throughout the west stadium seating, construction of new wheelchair-accessible spectator landings on both sides of the press box, and coordination of the installation of 860 new black and gold chair-back seats and new bleachers for over 2,300 spectators to enhance spectator comfort and aesthetics.

The project was successfully completed on schedule in Spring 2024, just in time for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Emporia State University in May. The improvements have enhanced the stadium’s safety, accessibility, and spectator experience, ensuring its continued use for years to come.
