Hiawatha Water Treatment Improvements

Hiawatha Water Treatment Improvements

Hiawatha, KS
United States

Nitrate levels in the City of Hiawatha water supply increased to the point that they were no longer compliant with state and federal standards. BG Consultants, Inc. was selected to perform an engineering study to examine alternatives for supply and treatment. The existing system supply was from two separate well fields. BG evaluated several treatment options and scenarios to find the best alternative for the City and created a system-wide hydraulic model of the distribution system to evaluate the feasibility of blending two separate sources within the distribution system. Ultimately a new Ion Exchange treatment plant treating the north well field was the recommended solution.

BG Consultants designed the recommended improvements which include the following components:

  • Existing well house Improvements
  • 3,300 SF water treatment facility
  • Office and laboratory areas
  • 750 gpm capacity ion exchange treatment equipment
  • Gas chlorine and fluoride chemical feed system
  • 100,000 gallon clear well
  • 1,000 gpm high service pump station
  • 4 acres of double lined brine water lagoons
  • Circulation & re-chlorination station in southern distribution area
