KSU Center for Child Development Parking & Stormwater

When Kansas State University moved the Center for Child Development into a new building, they contracted BG Consultants to design the associated parking lot and an environmentally responsible stormwater management system. K-State relied on BG for design, guidance, and insight in the effort to merge the growth of their facilities with continued environmental stewardship.

BG’s team evaluated the site and developed a system of stormwater management and pollutant reduction. This was achieved by incorporating a 12,400-square foot permeable parking lot, two bioretention facilities, two rain gardens, and a stormwater harvesting tank with 22,000-gallon capacity for onsite irrigation purposes. The primary intent of this approach was to protect the environmental health and quality of life for the area while providing for the emergent needs of the university’s expansion. The design planned for proactive stormwater management practices while ensuring compliance with water quality regulations.
