Lyon County RWD #1 2014 Water System Improvements

In 2011, Lyon County RWD No. 1 constructed Phase I water system improvements in the City of Americus and at the pump station in Emporia. After completion, the RWD again contracted with BG Consultants to prepare a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) for Phase II improvements.

In the PER, BG Consultants recommended replacing the entire original rural distribution system—approximately 17 miles of waterlines. Also recommended in this phase was the replacement of a portion of the original system within Americus, replacing approximately 9,600 feet of waterline. Additionally, BG’s team recommended constructing approximately six miles of new waterline to serve new users. These users were currently supplied from private wells with poor water quality. Some of these wells did not meet the minimum requirements for public drinking water.

In 2012, the PER was submitted to CDBG for a grant application. Upon award, BG developed design plans and bidding documents for the proposed improvements. The design included approximately 21,460 feet of C-900 PVC waterline of various diameters, 79,200 feet of PVC class 200 waterline of various diameters, 7,625 feet of HDPE service line, seven new fire hydrants, and 108 service assemblies. The project was completed in February 2015.
