Lyon County Shop

Emporia, KS

The Lyon County Highway Department in Emporia, KS, approached the BG Consultants team to design two pre-engineered metal building shop facilities to be used for fleet and vehicle maintenance functions, as well as storage of miscellaneous road and bridge equipment. Providing an efficient, functional and secure workspace for fleet and vehicle maintenance is an essential step to keeping the department’s vehicles and machinery in good and lasting condition. The buildings’ designs towards secure storage of miscellaneous machinery and equipment will also serve to reduce the risk of damage or loss.

The first building was designed at 15,000 square feet with a 2,222 square foot heavy-storage mezzanine, while the second building was designed at 4,000 square foot with a 426 square foot heavy-storage mezzanine, along with a 1,600 square foot covered exterior storage area. These buildings were respectively equipped with operable 15-ton and 7.5-ton overhead bridge cranes, hardened shelter areas, restrooms, offices, storage rooms, and peripheral site/yard improvements.

The buildings are constructed as a combination of Type II non-combustible materials including CMU, steel, and cast concrete. The exterior is finished with split-faced CMU, vertical metal paneling, and high windows on each facade for adequate daylighting and reduced energy consumption. Operable overhead bridge cranes are supplemented with vehicle lift stations, air compressors, pneumatic hose reels, equipment storage racks, high bay lighting, and suspended HVAC systems. The shop is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system for active fire suppression and code compliance.

The BG design team was tasked with all project design components related to Surveying, Architectural, Structural, MEP, and Civil scopes as well as Construction Administration services. BG Consultants facilitated the project delivery through the design-bid-build method, in which NF Construction was selected as the general contractor for the project. The project was completed March 2024.

This project will provide the Lyon County Highway Department the ability to serve the public by performing future road and bridge maintenance operations with reliable equipment at optimal efficiency.
