Morris County Parkerville Road Bridge
Council Grove, KS
United States
The deck of this deck-tee-girder type bridge was in very poor condition, but on this type of bridge, the deck cannot be removed and replaced independent of the girders. Many would move to replace the entire bridge, but BG, recognizing the substructure was still in good condition, developed a plan to remove the superstructure and re-use the existing piers and abutments.
The existing superstructure was carefully cut and chipped away, then new caps were poured atop the piers on which to place bearings and rolled steel beams. The weathering steel beams, made integral with the abutments, will provide a long service life, and the new concrete deck was able to be constructed wider than the existing and includes standard corral bridge rail and approach guardrails. This innovative project was selected for partial funding by the KDOT Cost Share Program and ended up costing around half the price of a completely new bridge.
BG helped Morris County secure the necessary permits, easements and utility coordination prior to letting as well as assisted the county with advertising and bidding. BG also provided construction inspection and testing services for the project as well as construction contract administration. The project resulted in greatly enhanced safety, and a bridge that will reliably carry legal loads, wide farm equipment and growing traffic volumes with minimal maintenance for many years into the future.
