Orchard Douglas County Bank

Lawrence, KS

Originally constructed in 1981, Douglas County Bank: Orchard’s Branch desired to create a modern contemporary atmosphere within the bank’s interior, upgrading the overall appearance of the bank and interior finishes. BG Consultants was retained to design a complete interior renovation of the existing facility, eliminating the dark, closed interior and transforming it into a vibrant, open and engaging experience for their customers. Challenges to the interior design included low ceilings, limited footprint within the public realm, and utilizing pre-purchased furniture.

Interior and exterior design features now reflect a circular theme based around an existing central structural column. Instead of minimizing the column, it became a focal point that is celebrated by wrapping the surface with a custom brushed aluminum cover. A new curved glass storefront and attached patio brought increased light to the interior and reflected the circular lines created by the column. All casework was custom designed to fit within the circular theme and create easy circulation through a tight space.

Furniture purchased by the client prior to the project kick-off was elected to stay, with rich cherry wood and green-gray upholstery. To complement this, BG selected a color palette that would work with the existing while also bringing a sense of comfort and tranquility to the bank’s clients and staff. New carpeting is highlighted with a burgundy carpet tile and light cream porcelain tile accents. A soft green paint color accentuates the cherry casework.  Green approach to the selection of the finishes and their life-cycle cost were vital considerations.

BG also redesigned portions the exterior of the bank to tie into the overall concept of the new design. This included re-roofing the entire facility to eliminate leaks that bank staff had dealt with for years.
