Listed in the national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Hall of Fame, the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail runs 52 miles along a former Kansas railway from Iola to Ottawa. The City of Ottawa contracted BG Consultants to design a segment of this highly successful trail. BG Consultants designed the 10-foot wide asphalt trail from the north end of the trail’s Marais des Cygnes River bridge to the Old Depot Museum trailhead.

The trailhead features parking, restrooms, and a water fountain. BG engineers prepared designs for pavement, concrete curbs and gutters, concrete parking lot pavement, ADA compliance amenities, storm water drainage improvements, brick pavement, decorative lighting, benches, and pavement markings.
