Sunset Zoo Parking Lot & Service Road Improvements

BG Consultants was contracted in the fall of 2017 to design the Sunset Zoo Parking Lot and North Service Road Improvements for the City of Manhattan.  The project design required coordination with multiple departments within the City of Manhattan:  Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Manhattan Fire Department, Code Services and Legal. There was also coordination with outside entities such as numerous utility companies and USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Unified School District due to the project’s proximity to Manhattan High School.

Morris County Parkerville Road Bridge

The deck of this deck-tee-girder type bridge was in very poor condition, but on this type of bridge, the deck cannot be removed and replaced independent of the girders. Many would move to replace the entire bridge, but BG, recognizing the substructure was still in good condition, developed a plan to remove the superstructure and re-use the existing piers and abutments.

Jackson County Bridge Q.4-275 Replacement

When old US Highway 75 was turned over to Jackson County, along with it came the 80’ through-truss bridge over Straight Creek, built in 1925. The existing bridge was deteriorating, had a 20’ wide roadway between the trusses, and was posted for load capacity. This significantly limited its usefulness to the agriculture equipment frequenting the area, so the County came to BG Consultants to evaluate their options for replacement.

Manhattan Anderson Avenue Bridge Replacement

The nearly 90-year-old bridge carrying Anderson Avenue over Kitten Creek on the East edge of Keats was narrow, in poor condition and had become a maintenance headache for Riley County. They contracted BG Consultants to study alternatives for not only the replacement structure, but for detours or construction phasing alternatives to maintain access to Keats. BG developed alternatives and associated cost estimates, presented them at a public meeting, and then collected public comments to review with the county.

Linn County Hell's Bend Bridge

BG Consultants assisted Linn County in applying for funding through KDOT’s Off-System Bridge Program for the replacement of bridge OS-5, locally called Hell’s Bend Bridge. The existing bridge was fracture critical, requiring more costly inspections, and was not capable of carrying legal loads or some emergency vehicles across the bridge. The bridge, over the BNSF railroad, served as the only access to a couple residences/properties lying West of the railroad tracks within a bend in the Marais Des Cygnes River.

Miami County Road Resurfacing

BG Consultants was retained by Miami County in 2020 and 2021 to prepare an abbreviated set of bidding documents for their annual countywide road resurfacing projects.  BG’s services included site visits with County Staff to verify site locations and pavement resurfacing needs.  Aerial imagery and GIS data was used, along with isolated field measurements, to prepare bidding documents for resurfacing improvements. Although most roadways consisted of milling and overlaying, some consisted of base rock work and new pavement, as well as bridge approach repairs and installation of

Lawrence Queens Road Street, Stormwater & Waterline Improvements

This project included the design of approximately $6.5 million in street, storm sewer, waterline and sanitary sewer force main improvements for the City of Lawrence. Queens Road had experienced significant urban residential development surrounding the corridor, including residential subdivisions and a number of large apartment complexes. The project required close coordination with development plans for the adjacent development projects.

Manhattan North Campus Corridor Improvements

In 2010, BG Consultants began surveying and completing preliminary concept layouts for the Denison Avenue & Kimball Avenue modifications in Manhattan, Kansas. These modifications are necessary to accommodate the additional traffic that will be associated with the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF). The proposed improvements include adjustments on Denison Avenue through the entrance to the Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex at Kansas State University.
